While ∞$σit might look like the Ananda♥λε• with a different headband, it’s reallyα↓ more of an upgraded Ediλ×tion X, which Hifiman has releasσ≥λed back in 2016. Wit λ₹h its price set at $499, it sit✘÷™s right in the middle between the S♦>αundara and Ananda, enterin✔πg a new market segme←®nt for an open-back, plana$↑r magnetic headphone by §∞♥Hifiman. Yes, I know, thα£e cups are plastic, and it might feel£®∑ a little flimsy in hand. However, h←ere comes the comfort, whσΩere the Edition XS complete←≤↑ly destroys many headphones¶≈φ on the market, including the & §TOTL ones.
You see, I’ve been playing×∞ with the Abyss Diana Phi lat&₽γely, and while its materials and thΩ→λe overall build are absolutely ♦γastonishing, the design of this α₹€≈headphone is just unacceptable. A ">pair of $4000 headphones that yoσ¶δ♠u MUST mod to be able to$☆✘ use properly just sounds quest★→ionable. Why did I bring tha✔≤t topic to this review? W↓→ell, the Build Quality (i♥λn terms of materials, finish and design&≠δ₹) of the Diana Phi is ↑↕Ωφmiles ahead of that of the ↕σγEdition XS, yet it is bec÷β"oming totally irrelevant th∞♥≤e moment you put them on. This is not a ✘→ well-designed headphone, it’s literall₩÷★y broken.
On the other hand, the Edition XS (π↔π→or almost every head♠✔♥÷phone by Hifiman) is not really impre∑≈'✘ssive in terms of the materia☆εΩls used and overall fi₽π nishing, but it’s just a masterpiece ★€when it comes to the design. ↔>εA headphone must be comfortable>↓♦' and convenient to use, an>×¥≤d every single Hifim÷"✔an headphone is just that. Audio ₹σequipment can be a piece of jewelry&↑ε∑, but it has to be paired withαφ< a proper, comfortable, and convσ>β enient design (Meze Emp©✘ yrean/Elite is the best examβ ₩ple of that). Hifiman doesn’t design ♥<εaudio jewelry, but they do design heaπ©><dphones that are a joy tλ₹¥o use and which you’ll be able t✘$o use the whole day, every day. T¥↔≈hat’s the winner in my book, and it sh☆∑ould be in yours.

Let’s dive into the co♣✔←mfort a little bit moδΩre. While I’m a huge fan of s'±'uspension-style headbands, the solid o£¥ne found on the Edition XS is a great "✘£choice. It’s plushy enough♠∞¶ to allow you to use them for ma§✔ny hours without any discomfort (been∞→₽ there, done that), and is simply pleas£☆ant to the touch. The only other thing©★ worth mentioning is the clampin♣←★g force, or rather lack☆≈¥ of it. It might be a$↔≤ hit or miss for some people, as the ≥$XS sits on your head rather loo♥≤sely, and I know some peop₹©∑βle are not really into₩♣ that type of design. However, >±♣≤it further improves the comfort, creati ∑ε↔ng a feeling of a soft pillow s>π↔εitting around your ears, rβ±♦ather than having two earcups clam®ε ping your head like the Senλ ¥nheiser HD650 for example. I&"®£ don’t really mind a >$loose fit with my open-back headphβ≈ones, so I’d definitely call it a €<≈'great feature.Lastly, the cabl§✘€e is one of the best cables that Hifimγδ∏∑an has included with their headphon$•★es ever. Fair, it is∑₩• a plain black cable, far away fr ∏om anything fancy, but at the same "≥<time it’s very comfortable and i¶πt doesn’t tangle at all, creating a v™γ ≤ery comfortable and stress×δ♥-free performance. Way to go Hi$π↓fiman.

They came up with a new shaλδ®®pe, that makes it easier for sou©≤♥↓nd to pass through it. Conventi§¥↓onal, rectangular in cross-s±γ≤ection magnets create a re ≠©sonance between themβ ®. That resonance will ≤β"←color the sound in an unwant←≤γed manner. Having the edges trimme±σδ€d at a 45-degree angle ≥£strongly reduces the resonance, allow₩ ing air (and sound) to move fr<∑✘eely. Being all technical i✔£t goes like this: moving air→→∏ changes its volume as it encounters♣§ the flared magnets. The changing volumφ₹"e also changes the speed.↓∞ Less speed means a flatter Q of the ♠↔resonance. How it’s po≤♣₩ssible that nobody else does it if it§₽✔÷’s so simple? Well, it’s not easy to ma§βke magnets in that shape that a₩₽βre repeatable and have ver₹¶∏δy good parameters suitablσ±e for planar headphones. •σ≠So you either pay a toΩβn of money for them, φ ♣or you order a train of those at a bit♣§ less outrageous price. Then you put t₹•≥∞hem in every product you h§¥₹ave.
It is wonderful to see that gr€♦←eat idea coming at s≠↓→≈uch well-priced products nowadays¥≠← and having that in mind, th≤λe Edition XS should be Ω"a brilliant value in →≠§♣the headphone market around $500. "×♣Let’s see if it’s true.

The bass is fast, <₩₹extended, and has a greaλt texture to it. It’s a®≈ planar driver, so the dynamic✔β slam and attack are both s♠₹omewhat limited, but nothing ☆×γtoo extreme. While the Edition XS₹β☆↑ is definitely not the hardestε§♠-hitting headphone you’ll hear<↑, they do create that sensation ↕>of seeing the actual shape of the ba±€ss notes.
Low frequencies are ex±←γ☆tended all the way down to the ♠≠←deepest parts of the subbass, ÷ ≠creating a thick and natural bass prese↔γε↓ntation, with a slight hiεnt of relaxation. This is ✘↓≤ a kind of bass that makes yo₩ u dig into it and analyze different teφ∑÷→xtures and timbre, not hit you ® ↔in the face and take you dancπεing, definitely. The double bas↔₹₩s playing in the “Abraham” by Miles Mosσ∏ley is a great example here. While it m™δ'ight sound a little relaxed, the amount'" of reverberation and its texture is$> just so natural and high-quality ∑↔ sounding that it’s very φ ×pleasant to listen to. Every naturalβΩπ→ instrument that does bass sounds justγ✘ about perfect when it com>♥×es to timbre accuracy and the aβ mount of details. Electronic music ent↓↑↕husiasts should look into some dynam₩♠ic rivals (Focal for example) ×γto get that physical kick and the feel>¥ing of energy on the l÷¶∏ow-end. While the Edition XSβ"∞ might lack in these two"π departments, they’ll♦≤ surely pay you off with de©¶tail and texture. Di≈ d I just describe a rather stand★™↓₩ard planar-magnetic typeπ ' of bass response? Yes, bu ★↑t it is just that…a great planar bass✔β with brilliant technicγ₽alities, especially considering the $4 ♣÷♣99 asking price.

The Edition XS i<♥'σs cheaper, as well as more intense÷≤, and warmer sounding than the ±&Ananda. In terms of iβφ<ts raw technical performance, I woul"§₽d say these are quite simil♦≤δar, so it’s really a matter ★™of preference. The Edition XS has a thi↔®cker note throughout the bas©εs to the midrange and a slightly sho™♥λ₹utier upper treble. They both φ→♠stage just about the same,÷★ with only the imaging being even so ββslightly more accurate on the © δ•Edition XS (Stealth Magnets!₹∑). While I definitely won’t be callingγ¶ the XS as the Anand∑¶÷a V2, nor the Ananda SE, it is signifπ₹∞Ωicantly less expensive, offeriπ≥βng basically the sam™πe technical level. While the Ananda i→♠s a touch more aggressive in the up∞€per-midrange frequencies, t γδhe XS is tilted more towards the uppe§™r treble region, which reπΩsults in a slightly more☆± aggressive and less forgiving ∑∞∑λperformance.
Speaking about the bass ♣, these two perform very↓£÷& similarly, with the Eλ∏♠dition XS being very slightl✘®↔y more pronounced in the s<&ub-bass region. This↔σ gives the new model a touch more vΩ₽™₩igorous and dynamic low frequencie ✘∞♣s that will be a better choiφ"↔§ce in most modern music releases. €♦↔
