While it mi©©ght look like the Ananda with a∞♣§ different headband, it’s really mor<↕e of an upgraded Edition X,∏∏ which Hifiman has released back i&¶n 2016. With its price set λγ at $499, it sits right in the middle &$Ω₩between the Sundara and Ananda, enter§&σing a new market segment for→™ an open-back, planar magnetic heaβ←✔<dphone by Hifiman. Would ≠you really like it in exchange for some>π fancy accessories that you’ll ✔probably never (or rarely) use? I def← initely would not.Having ₽πthat in mind, you simply ca ≈n’t criticize the kind ✘'≥of approach that Hifiman too≤✔σk with their modern lineup. You’ ×✘§re paying for the performance>, not the experience, and conside↔↕ring the retail price, ✘∑•you surely want just that.

Same story. The Edition XS is b÷≤↑asically the Ananda with HE400i 2020 t←★≤£ype of headband. The overall builγ✘d quality is flawless, I have a₽ε₹bsolutely nothing to criti&>cize. Yes, I know, the cups '≠×are plastic, and it might feel a l&÷ittle flimsy in hand. How≈$αever, here comes the comf ®ort, where the Edition XS completel₽∏×y destroys many headphones on>"§ the market, including the ≤←≈TOTL ones.
You see, I’ve been playing wi"→≈th the Abyss Diana Phi lately, an♦ d while its materials and the overaπ¶ll build are absolutely ©♦astonishing, the design ♦>↑of this headphone is↕©Ω just unacceptable. A pair of $4000 he♥αadphones that you MUST <σmod to be able to use λ§properly just sounds questionabα≤le. Why did I bring that☆®₹ topic to this review? We≤ ll, the Build Quality (in terms of ma₹♠₽terials, finish and design) of the D©♠iana Phi is miles ahead of that of ←§ the Edition XS, yet it is ≈♥λΩbecoming totally irrelevant t$¶×he moment you put them ™↓☆↕on. This is not a well-designed hλ™₩δeadphone, it’s literally broken♦©≈.
On the other hand, the Edition XS (or δγπalmost every headphone by $ ↔δHifiman) is not really impres ≠sive in terms of the mat☆±<®erials used and overall finishing, bu¥"★ t it’s just a masterpiece when it comeπδs to the design. A headphone must be co₩¶mfortable and convenient to use, and $€ every single Hifima±&>n headphone is just that. Audio ≤"equipment can be a piece of jewe•"lry, but it has to be pa™β₩↔ired with a proper, comfortable, and ☆ convenient design (Meze Empyλ¥β"rean/Elite is the best example of↕←®♦ that). Hifiman doesn’t design aud★$±io jewelry, but they do design h✘≠α∏eadphones that are a joy to use and wh←>'<ich you’ll be able to use the ®•whole day, every day. That’s the winner in my book, and it should be i₹φ₽n yours.

Let’s dive into the comfort ₩™αa little bit more. While I’m a huge fan¶<×φ of suspension-style headbands, the so $∞lid one found on the Edition XS is a g∞©≈&reat choice. It’s plushy enough to→$™ε allow you to use them for many hour←☆§s without any discomfort (been the"δ≤↕re, done that), and is s≈$ ₽imply pleasant to the →¶£®touch. The only other thin≤g worth mentioning is the clamping ≈₩Ωforce, or rather lack₹φ★ of it. It might be a hit or miss f≥ π₩or some people, as the X¥♦S sits on your head rather loosel≥≠↑y, and I know some people are×∞ not really into that type o± f design. However, i¥↔t further improves the₩≈₹& comfort, creating a ∞᮶feeling of a soft pillow sitting aroundσ your ears, rather than having two earε£cups clamping your head like σ∑≠☆the Sennheiser HD650 for♣≈₹ example. I don’t really mind a loose ↔Ωδ©fit with my open-bac→₽k headphones, so I’d definitely cΩ¶✘all it a great feature.&₹♦Lastly, the cable is one of th ©σe best cables that Hεγ♣ifiman has included w ith their headphones ever" ★. Fair, it is a plain black cable, far♠ε away from anything ₩ >©fancy, but at the same time it’s very c®₩₩♥omfortable and it doesn’t tan↓&gle at all, creating a very comf↔γσ≥ortable and stress-free performance. Once again I÷ε± can’t stress enoughγ♠→ how good of a technology this is, so &'♣↑I’d simply paste our descripti≈•< on from the Arya SE review: Stealth ↓×♦Magnets are what sets thσ₩☆™e tone for the current gene ♣≠ration of HiFiMan cans. They came ×✔₩πup with a new shape, that makes it e♠©∏asier for sound to pass thro'©$φugh it. Conventional, rectangular i™♥n cross-section magnσ™ets create a resonance b∑↑etween them. That resonanc₩∏≤δe will color the sound in$₽∏ an unwanted manner. Having the edge>®€₹s trimmed at a 45-degree angl>"✘÷e strongly reduces the ≈α∞→resonance, allowing air (and soundπ) to move freely. Being all technical i₹ Ωt goes like this: moving aiπγr changes its volume as it enc≈$™ounters the flared magnets. The changin≈δg volume also changes the speed. L≥∏ess speed means a flatter Q o γf the resonance. Howγ♣ it’s possible that nobody elseε∑ does it if it’s so simple? Well, it’β§≥s not easy to make ma $¥gnets in that shape th≤£αat are repeatable and have&÷ very good parameters suitable f₹™§♣or planar headphones. "λSo you either pay a ton of money for thβδem, or you order a train≈£ of those at a bit less outrageo®us price. Then you put ↓¥ them in every product you ∞δ§φhave.

Sound
Hifiman has its ow "n “house sound” that they are↕ sticking with for year≤₹πs now. It is all about ♦×♥the speed, clarity, and sγ↔↔ ublime technicalities×∞ at the prices that onlyλ≥> a couple of years ago would have been ✔φ↓called a steal of the century. The Editπ→≠γion XS continues thi∏÷☆s kind of approach, focusing mainφ÷ly on neutral tuning with a∞←&Ωn amazing detail retrieval. Let’s βφε dive into it.
The bass is fast, ×λextended, and has a great texture to it&® . It’s a planar driver, so the dynamic±↕ slam and attack are both somewhat limi∑∑≈ted, but nothing too extreme. Whi≤"le the Edition XS is ♣®↕definitely not the h✔£ardest-hitting headphone y ©£ou’ll hear, they do creat ✘e that sensation of see✔>ing the actual shape of the §& bass notes.
Low frequencies are extended all §γthe way down to the ✘±★deepest parts of the subbass, creating∞€ a thick and natural bass present¥≠ €ation, with a slight hint of ©•relaxation. This is ↓''$a kind of bass that makes you dig&Ω↓≠ into it and analyze different tex¥tures and timbre, not hit you in the☆♥ face and take you danci♦ ng, definitely. The <σdouble bass playing in the “Abε★™raham” by Miles Mosley is a great exa×σ®mple here. While it migh'↕t sound a little relaxed, the amo©unt of reverberation a≈' λnd its texture is just s↓✔Ωo natural and high-qualitε $y sounding that it’s φ♠≈☆very pleasant to listen to.σ"Ω Every natural instrum€>™δent that does bass s$÷ounds just about perfect wα¥∏αhen it comes to timbre accuracyσβ€✔ and the amount of details.÷€ Electronic music enthusiasts sh®≤₽γould look into some dynami€€σc rivals (Focal for example) to ge≠↔✘t that physical kick and the feelingγ™←★ of energy on the low-en∏♦€≤d. While the Edition XS mδ∏Ωight lack in these two depar™ ♣tments, they’ll surely pay you off wit£αh detail and texture. Didδ I just describe a rathe♦≤πβr standard planar-magnβε☆etic type of bass response? σ₹δYes, but it is just that…a grea✔©t planar bass with br↕✘Ωilliant technicalities, especi★↑Ω'ally considering the $499 'Ω>asking price.

The Edition XS is cheaper, as well >♥as more intense, and π®warmer sounding than the Ananda. In ter•¶'ms of its raw technical performance©¥♣, I would say these are quite ≤ similar, so it’s reaα₹πlly a matter of preference. The Edition→↑ XS has a thicker note throughout ∞¶the bass to the midrange and a sliπ↓ghtly shoutier upper tre ∑ ble. They both stage just about the s☆≤≈£ame, with only the imagiΩε∏♦ng being even so slightly more ♦₽σaccurate on the Edit&×☆ion XS (Stealth Magnets!). Whiβδ∞le I definitely won’t be calling "φ$≈the XS as the Ananda V2∏✘×∏, nor the Ananda SE, it ★₹εis significantly less expensiveε× , offering basically the samφ∞εe technical level. While the Ananda is $πa touch more aggressive in the upp≥&π♠er-midrange frequencies, ₩≈₩the XS is tilted more towards ×™∏the upper treble region, whichδ>♣ results in a slightly more aggressive ₹∏and less forgiving performance. ÷♠₩
Speaking about the bas↑φ±s, these two perform very similarly, w∑φith the Edition XS being ve✘α>✘ry slightly more pronounced in the ₩≤ sub-bass region.
