H★↓αowever, I find myself coming backΩα to electrostats time "&≠and again because of th¶€'∞eir transparency, coherence, >✔lightning quick and focused trans‍∑₹×ient response, clarity, and ₩←their natural-sounding±←← harmonics.

Both those state-✘↕of-the-art contenders cost oε•↕ver $50k, so the fact that the ‘Junior’∑₹$× gives up very little in terms of so€÷nic performance is quite an <£ achievement!

While a lot of the t<♣echnology in the Juni☆≈or headphone unit is similar to ♦♠​the reference Senior, it uses a✔ε> smaller driver or diaphragm. ♠ ‌✔According to designer Dr. Fan$γ×g Bian, HiFiMAN’s Founder and CEOα‍₩', the Junior’s smaller circul₽‍ ↑ar-shaped driver is £☆≥actually a bit faster than thβ¥♠e Senior’s larger oval-shaped one. Theδ∏ nano-particle coating on bo¶≠∞φth ultra-thin (less tha♥↕n 0.001mm) diaphragms is Ω≠♣very evenly distributedδ$" to avoid hot spots, and the stators s☆♠♠hare similar material<©βσs. Both use sophisticated microσ↓≤-mesh wire stators working in γ₹×♣close proximity to the diaphragm ↓✘↑☆to increase openness and minimize d← istortion while allowing extended fr↔Ω> equency response from 7Hz to 1☆¶♣20kHz. It shares←Ω↕∞ a similar circuit structure w©"✘ ith the larger Senior model’s amplifi ¶er and also uses a stepped ∑¥attenuator volume con÷♠δ trol to keep the signal✔¶γ★ pure. While certainly not portable, t≠↔he Junior’s amplifier is easil×​y ‘luggable’ and fits comf±✘ortably on a desk, tabletop, or n‌'↕✔ightstand. Its input stage, π₩using four matched 6SN7N÷↔ valves, produces a w₩↑&ide soundstage and musicality in spade♥‌s. The Junior amp is a hybrid, ma≥↓"γting a Class A output stagΩ₩e with the valve input stage. IΩ♣t is able to drive di♦βfficult loads and at the rece≤♥nt AXPONA show, it drove Ω both the Shangri-La ↓ ≈∑Senior and Junior simultaneously ↓£§via its two five-pin ele≤≈¥ctrostatic headphone jacks.✘₩ ≠ Some show attendees plugg& φed their Stax headphones into the amp↕÷€π and reported very good results. The ×₹↓✘Junior’s amp (availa $αble separately for $€♣←•5,000 US, or £4,399 UK) is wort$×♥hy of a separate review—it’s t  ‌hat good!

It’s difficult to mσααatch the seamless coherency of th‌ e Junior with any multi-dri∞π‌ver transducer—as is apparent on de☆¶πmanding vocal and piano recordings. δ♦®

Female voice∏εs like Sara Vaughn’s on Ballads&nb ₩sp;[Roulette Jazz] or Julie London’π♠εs on Cry Me A River[Liberty §±₩ Records] are seductive and meαπ♣smerizing, and massed voices on Re¥γεference Recordings’ wonderful recoπ'rding of John Rutter’s&n £Ωbsp;Requiemare close to the best ₹•I’ve heard outside of the conc"©$↔ert hall. They’re spread across a wide£'↔ and deep sound stage, theε¥→> sound is rich and full-bodi≠→&∞ed, and one can clea≥"≥εrly hear the ambience of the ha'®≠ ll.

With its extended frequency r↓≥→&esponse and low colouration, the± δ✔ Junior is ruthlessly revealing $×¶of flaws in source material, ≈£¶✔cables, and associated electronics, and₩<→& the Junior sounds better ←‌♦§with well-recorded high-resolution tra  ∑♣cks and LPs. As with many ref★↓≥erence components, tφ₹↑he better the ancillary equ> ₩✔ipment and cables you use the bet ♥<ter the sound will be. My tube-based Mo×¶dwright-Oppo player, aided by a₽₩≥ Shunyata Research Alpha power cable, £≥produced far better results than what♥$× I heard from the Junior atε→↕ both CanJam SoCal and AXPON δδ>A. Specifically, the sou&∏☆nd was significantly more neu×≈♣tral and natural with these±φ↕§ better associated componen£σ★ts and cables than in the tΩ€rade show demos. (I suspe±>‌ct the noisy hotel power a↓¥$‍t both shows was the cul→₹™≤prit).
